Quick and easy!
We can’t wait to hear about all the books you read over the holidays!
Our freshmen classes have spent the last few weeks studying and analyzing the themes and tones of different poems. As an enrichment to their studies, each class came into the library this week to create an original poem using only the titles of books (located on the book spines). Students created their own individual poems using at least 6 books. They were encouraged to think about the tone of their poem while choosing their books.
The students were so excited about this activity! Here are some of their incredible creations:
After students created an individual poem, they created a group poem for a grade level contest the teachers are hosting. The competition is stiff! Check out this entry for the contest! So creative!
Special thanks to Coach Maxey, Coach Huff, and Mrs. Stuckey for bringing their students to the library for this engaging lesson!
Katy ISD has subscribed to an incredible collection of more than two million copyright-friendly images through Britannica called Image Quest.
Teachers can quickly find images for lesson plans and classroom activities, while students can use the site for homework assignments and project-based learning. Each photo or illustration comes with citations, including the source, the copyright holder, caption, and keywords.
How to find Image Quest:
1. Go the Katy ISD homepage at www.katyisd.org
2. Click on the “students” tab at the top and select “secondary portal.”
3. Click on the Britannica Image Quest icon.

Every year, I like to celebrate the holidays with fun holiday activities and puzzles for the staff. During each of the 12 days before the start of the winter break, I will send out a holiday puzzle for the staff to complete. Although the activity is OPTIONAL, it is a lot of fun! For each day that they participate, their name is put into a drawing for an awesome book wreath that my aide and I made. The winner will be announced on Friday, December 20th. Stay tuned!
Thank you to everyone who helped make our Books Abroad Drive a success! We collected 3 boxes of books and 1 HUGE box of clothing for children in Nigeria. Way to go, Falcons!!
The Tompkins Library is hosting its first ever book fair in the library Tuesday, 12/3 – Thursday, 12/5. Stop by the library anytime during school hours to shop the huge selection of books. Don’t forget…books make great gifts!
Also, the library will be having a “Guess who’s wallet this belongs to” contest for students. Several teachers have shared pictures of their wallets and the students have to try and guess which wallet goes with which teacher. The winner of the contest will be announced on Thursday and that student will win a free paperback book at the book fair. Show me the money! 🙂
